DevGAMM Moscow 2015 Kicks Off May 15

The international conference for game developers and publishers DevGAMM Moscow 2015 will be held in Moscow on May 15-16.

Over 1,500 game industry professionals from all over the world will gather at Radisson Slavyanskaya Hotel.

This time 95% of sessions at DevGAMM Moscow 2015 will be dedicated to development, art, game design, programming, sound design, postmortems and porting to all kinds of platforms (Xbox, PlayStation, Wii U, Steam, Facebook, etc.).

‘Mafia 3’ Could Be Revealed at E3 2015

Rumors abound that a gameplay trailer for “Mafia 3” could be shown at E3 2015 in Los Angeles in June. The game supposedly is in development for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 (PS4) and PC.

Rick Pasqualone teased a few months back that “Mafia 3” was coming out. When fans first heard the news, there was a lot of excitement, but nothing has been heard since.

The open-world element, the prohibition-era setting and the gangster drama makes “Mafia 3” truly unique. The game also is being built on the Unreal 4 Engine.

“Mafia 2” was a very good game with a deep story, so “Mafia 3” has some great potential. Online retailer Play-Asia stirred some more news about “Mafia 3” by saying that the game is listed for PS4 and Xbox One.

Square Enix Will Host a Press Conference at E3 2015

Square Enix has been really busy over the past few months. The company has been in heavy development with “Final Fantasy XV” and is finally putting “Just Cause 3” in development.

Square Enix announced that it will hold a press conference June 16, 2015, just before E3 2015 kicks off. The press conference can be watched on Twitch and YouTube.

10th Annual Game Marketing Awards Winners Announced

Activision’s Jonathan Anastas Named Co-Chair of Game Marketing Summit

At the eleven events of the INTERNATIONAL GAMES WEEK BERLIN (April 21-26, 2015) everything will revolve around computer games. The INTERNATIONAL GAMES WEEK BERLIN will officially be opened by Björn Böhning, Head of the Berlin Senate Chancellery, and Brigitte Zypries, Parliamentary State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Games Week Berlin and Quo Vadis Center at Kino International. The Opening Summit is the kick-off event of the INTERNATIONAL GAMES WEEK BERLIN, where representatives of politics, media and public institutions in Germany and Europe can meet and network with the international games industry.

Microsoft Might Unveil Surface Pro 4 at Microsoft Build 2015

Korean outlet DigitTimes has put out a report saying that Microsoft might unveil the Surface Pro 4 during the Microsoft Build 2015 conference. This report also says that the company plans to enter mass production in June and will release the tablet along with Windows 10 in the latter of 2015. The tablet is rumored to come in 12-inch and 14-inch forms. Microsoft said that the Surface Pro 4 will act as a launch device for Windows 10. The Microsoft Build 2015 conference will be held from April 29 until May 1.

Interview: Events for Gamers Chats With the HavenCon Team

In our previous article on HavenCon, we went through how great the event turned out to be, exceeding our expectations on what makes an all-inclusive conference welcoming and fun. Here’s our additional interview with Shane Brown from the event!

Events For Gamers: Why create an event like HavenCon, and for who is it meant for?

Shane: HavenCon is meant to be a safe space for the LGBT geek and gaming community here in Texas and surrounding areas. I felt it was important to be able to bring together these large and diverse communities in a setting where we are able to be ourselves allowing us to communicate openly about the things we are passionate about with those that support us. It also lends itself to those who may be more interested in finding out what our thoughts and opinions are on a wide range of topics while opening the door for constructive conversation with industry leaders and other influencers in the various genres represented.

E4G: Why did you choose the name ‘HavenCon’, and what’s the general story behind your team?

Shane: HavenCon is something that evolved over time. The name is one I have used for various “business” endeavors over the years. The heart of “Haven” has always been that of a safe space. Though it has taken many forms. The very original concept was a safe space for kids in a small town in South Dakota (long long story), but the heat of it has always been safety and a place to be one’s self.

Planning a convention came to light in more recent years, and I began that process with another person a couple of years ago. But, due to differences in ideology and how something like this should be done, we parted ways. I picked up the idea again last year after deciding I needed to do something more meaningful with my own life and because I loved seeing the various geekdoms come together on a smaller scale with the Gay Austin Geeks, I took that plunge. Very happy for doing that, I must say.

E4G: 2015 was the inaugural year for HavenCon. Was it the success you hoped for?

Shane: It was above and beyond my wildest expectations. Not just in attendance but in the sense of community that was there. I thought “Hey, this will be fun”…but it actually touched people’s lives on a level I was not expecting. And everyone was so generous in expressing that, that it almost seemed surreal to me. I couldn’t have been happier with this even if I tried.

E4G: What does it mean for LGBT folk to attend an event like HavenCon?

Shane: I can’t speak directly for them, but from the feedback I have received, it has meant the world. They met new friends, discovered new fandoms, and generally had a great time. There was no pressure, no politics (ish), and people could just be themselves! It was amazing to see from my perspective and I can’t even count the amazing amount of thanks I have received since then. Truly an amazing community.

E4G: Activities like the Cosplay contest gave the event a big boost in the fun factor. What did you see as the success of the event in this regard?

Shane: All of it! The tournaments seemed to go well in the gaming area. The tabletop demos looking like a big hit. The cosplay contest was pretty phenomenal for a first year and little to no planning on both sides. I think people were just happy to be there in general and these things sort of perked it up a bit. It’s something we want to carry on and improve upon for next year for sure.

E4G: We were surprised at the amount of vendors in the main hall for an inaugural event. What were some of the themes you intended to promote?

Shane: My big focus was on having at least *some* representation of each fandom. Whether it be comics, games, toys, movies, etc. I tried hard to select those that represented themselves well in those areas, and I was not disappointed. The response from the vendors was phenomenal, and just about all of them want to come back next year!

E4G: What can attendees look forward to next year that will improve upon the already success of 2015?

Shane: We’ll have more time and a better budget (I hope lol) to really hash out the ins and outs of what we did this year to make it better. The feedback we have gotten has been amazing positive with just the right amount of “this could have been a little different” that I can’t wait to incorporate it all into next year. That main stage will not be in the same space HAHA! But all in all, we just want to work out the minor issues we had this year and focus on expanding each area represented this year a little more. I personally have so many ideas for next year I can’t wait to get started!

E4G: If someone cannot attend, what online groups and hangouts would you recommend they reach out to for support and general gaymer interest?

Shane: Oh wow! I organize the Gay Austin Geeks (find them on facebook). Houston Gaymers made a showing along with the Phoenix Gaymers. I know most major cities have a geek or Gaymer group, so I highly recommend you seek them out.

E4G: Anything else you would like to share about HavenCon and what’s coming up for the 2016 event?

Shane: I loved the truly community feel of this event. And that is exactly what I was going for. I want to carry that on to next year while still allowing for some growth. So, I will be doing my best to balance growth while maintaining that closeness we all felt this year. Again, so many ideas! More panels and presentations, better timing of such. MORE GAMING! Just so many wonderful things we can do from here.

Exploring a True LGBTQIA Haven at the Inaugural HavenCon Event

We came away from HavenCon feeling even more excited that events like these are becoming more friendly and welcome to the wider gaming community. Want to know what all goes on at a convention of LGBTQIA gamers? Here’s our introduction to the inaugural HavenCon event in Austin:

Celebrating Diversity in the Game Industry

While HavenCon supports those whom identify as “Gay”, the event also caters to the entire LGBTQIA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual) community. It also reaches deep into the professional game industry across with many prominent developers attending, not surprisingly a few from Bioware. Events For Gamers also attended to show support, as our site’s very existence depends upon a diverse viewership, not to mention it’s just the right thing to do.

HavenCon is a convention not about the business side of the game industry, but more about the friendly and diverse LGBTQIA community. Everyone was excited to be amongst their friends and peers in an environment that felt safe. In their own ways, everyone represented the need for support and acceptance in an industry that still has a long ways to go to be as inclusive as other groups have achieved, even when comparing to women in games.

Equality in diversity is the key phrase that hits at the core of what events like HavenCon are all about. Think about when you sit down at a computer and fire up a game. Have you ever created a character of the opposite gender? What about adding a touch of pink or green to their hair, longer eye lashes, a change in skin tone, or voice inflection? Does it really matter to others in the game who is behind that avatar? It usually never crosses their mind, as it’s simply not a concern.

Having a safe haven to understand yourself and place in the game community is what HavenCon is about in our view. The event is a great resource for gaymers to express and celebrate their natural preferences and diversity together. In many ways it’s much like any other convention with cosplay, games, and other activities, except with HavenCon attendees have a space to pull back that game cloak without being afraid of supposed friends shaming them for being different.

The Hotel and Vendor Hall

All of the planning that went into HavenCon was worth it, starting with the coordinator’s choosing a hotel that had a layout that didn’t make you walk for hours to find the bathroom, or wonder if the next person around the corner was friend or foe. The convenience was welcomed by all. Nearly all con space was on one floor, which made it nice to both access a panel in a hurry, as well as impossible not to bump into an existing friend or meet someone new.

While we definitely have to give props to all involved in making HavenCon a truly safe haven, including many volunteers and guests, the hotel staff were also instrumental in supporting the event. Without a place for the guests to stay and gather under one roof, a HavenCon type of event of this scale wouldn’t be possible at all. We thank the Holiday Inn for hosting the event!

In addition to the standard event expectations of a panel hall, snack lounge, and meeting rooms, there was also the main stage room filled with vendors from across the country. I enjoyed visiting this space regularly to talk with the vendors presenting everything from plushies to board games. If you wanted to hang out in a central area just to randomly meet new people, this was the place to do it.

Sessions, Roundtables, and Panels

While conventions are mostly about celebrating the fun in games and dressing up in cosplay, there are also a series of panels and roundtable sessions. HavenCon had these across several rooms fully equipped with projectors and recording equipment. It was just as well setup as any other events we’ve ever attended. I had panels on both Saturday and Sunday mornings with a full audience that asked a surprising breadth of questions. We even went overtime on talking about their own topics!

A speaker highlight was Dr. Rebecca Housel, Pop Culture Professor and writer of many articles and books, as well as a very talented speaker. Her first panel on Saturday talked about Joss Whedon, an actor and screenwriter that wrote the story behind the famous Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, Angel, and of course Firefly. He’s been a major proponent of equality both in and outside of the game industry, sharing much of this ideal in his writings.

There were also panels discussing the furry community. What is a furry? As with any hobby, most furries are normal people just like anyone you’ll meet at work or anywhere else. The furry costume is simply a way to express yourself in a way that you may not normally be comfortable or able to by your everyday persona. We all have our spirit animals or inner guides throughout life. Being a furry is just one way of expressing that part of themselves.

For developers that have seen this level of diversity, they should be designing games with diversity as a natural selective process that makes sense for their games, not as something that’s added because it is expected. Every game has the opportunity to include gay characters, but it doesn’t have to look like they are included just to appease the lawyers. Once straight gamers don’t think twice about that gay character they’ve selected, then true acceptance and diversity will have been achieved.

Expression of Diversity Through Cosplay

One of the highlights of the event was of course the Cosplay Contest. No convention of gamers and geeks is complete without contests that show off the amazing talent in attendee creativity. Every convention we have ever attended has a strong presence of super heroes, anime characters, or furries.

Sound strange? Just think about all those times you played a Ratonga in EverQuest, transformed into a bear in World of Warcraft, or as an Aurin in WildStar. Just because events like HavenCon present characters in the real world and not just in a fictional pixelated setting, doesn’t make them suddenly too close to reality to accept as an important emotional attachment.

The Cosplay Contest went beyond furries and characters in role-playing games. There were Pokemon and DC Universe characters, such as Pikachu (my costume) and Batman respectively. A Maleficent from last year’s movie also made an appearance. No one thought twice about whether someone was male or female, gay or straight. This blending of one’s identity is also a strong component of the furry community, where it doesn’t matter who’s presumed sexy body might be under the hood. It only matters that there’s a human with feelings under there.

Expectations for Attending HavenCon 2016

We came away with a very positive view for the future of the event and those whom attended. There’s little doubt that we plan to attend and support next year’s event!

What we didn’t see at HavenCon were the stereotypical ‘showing off’ of the gay community, or of pushing a supposed ‘agenda’ onto others. These are unfounded ideas some in the mainstream media still assume LGBTQIA folk are somehow after. These kind of events are inclusive in all the ways that matter. I challenge and strongly encourage straight folk to attend to better understand why these events exist.

What if HavenCon was in your city next year? Would you attend, even if you identified as straight or as some other diverse group like furies or as a character in your favorite MMO? We think you should then attend any convention like HavenCon where you’re brought together with like-minded gamers that share common interests. It’s almost guaranteed that usually allies, not enemies, are made along the way.

International Games Week Berlin Introduces Safe Space Policy for Diversity and Tolerance

Berlin, April 8, 2015. The INTERNATIONAL GAMES WEEK BERLIN is committed to diversity and tolerance in the games industry and therefore has decided to introduce a “Safe Space Policy” for all of its events. The organizers agree not to tolerate discrimination and harassment and to ensure an atmosphere in which all participants feel comfortable.

“The INTERNATIONAL GAMES WEEK BERLIN offers a safe and open-minded space for everyone. The games industry thrives on the colorful array of its personnel. As a result of the different target groups and various formats of our individual events, many different people come together – with our Safe Space Policy, we want to stimulate this mix of cultures and gender”, said Michael Liebe, Head of International Games Week Berlin. “The organizers of the participating events will not tolerate any kind of harassment of visitors.”

Casual Connect Asia 2015 Brings Indie Games Contest

The Way You Play: How Gaming Is Changing

Technology is continuously improving. Developers are enhancing graphics, and gaming computers are becoming faster and slimmer. And, fortunately, the premier tech is also getting cheaper.

Although CES displays all kinds of electronics, it usually does not have a wide variety of products for gamers, which usually are showcased at E3, explains PCMag. However, if you broaden your search to a wider variety of tech gadgets and consumer electronics, every gamer can find something interesting. That being said, here’s a look at some of the best tech revealed at CES 2015:

1. Origin Eon

This year’s CES was all about slimming down the most powerful gaming hardware on the market. With Battlefield Hardline PC hitting the market shortly, getting your hands on an Origin Eon-15X or 17X is a good idea. Battlefield Hardline weighs in at a hefty 60 GB install, so it requires a powerful computer. Origin has loaded up their 15X and 17X with desktop CPUs, which are up to the Intel Core i7-4790K, and the powerful Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M mobile graphics card. This means that a slim and portable laptop, weighing only between 7.5 and 8.5 pounds, can run your game just like a desktop computer.

The X series also has a 240 GB solid state hard drive as well as 1 TB hybrid disk from Seagate. These two laptops also come with full color, backlit keyboards with a numpad and anti-ghosting keys, which means you don’t have to worry about input overlap when playing a fast game, explains Digital Trends.

And best yet, the Eon-X series runs at a slightly lower price than its competitors.

2. Oculus Rift

Virtual reality also is making strides in the right direction. Reviewers such as TechRadar note the vast improvement of the Oculus Rift in terms of mobility and functionality, but also comment on its short comings. CNET notes that you can move around in these virtual worlds created by Oculus, such as ducking under things or walking around them, but there still is no way to grab and hold a virtual object, which limits your virtual experience.

While the Oculus Rift propels users into an immersive experience (for instance, you can meet the dragon Smaug while playing as Bilbo in The Hobbit), the authenticity of the experience is somewhat diminished by the cords trailing from the hardware. The reviewer from CNET explains that he could feel tugs of the cords attaching him to the computer, which can be distracting when in another world. And, although you can walk, crawl, kneel and make other movements to interact with these virtual worlds, it may be difficult or dangerous to do so in your home and not in a padded test room. So, not until the Oculus Rift becomes wireless will it fully immerse users within the worlds they are playing.

3. Accessories

Gaming mice and keyboards can change the way you play, but only if you have the right accessory for your type of gameplay. If you’re an MMO player, for example, the Razer Naga Epic Chroma might be the mouse for you; however, if you are a FPS person, the Corsair Vengeance M65 is probably more aligned with what you need. The Epic Chroma has 12 buttons on the thumb-side of the mouse so you can control much more than your character’s movements while the M65 has eight programmable buttons, one of which enters your view into sniper mode and slows down the DPI of your mouse so you can take aim more carefully.

Logitech has a long line of wireless keyboards that are great for gamers. The Solar Keyboard K750 works well for late-night gamers because it can charge off of any light and stay charged for up to three months in complete darkness. On the other hand, the G510 gaming keyboard has a small LCD display that provides all the in-game stats for whatever you’re playing.

Although CES isn’t the biggest gaming tech show, it didn’t disappoint this year with powerfully slimmed down computers, virtual reality and gaming accessories. Now the question is, what will we see next year?
