One of the busiest cons of the year, the San Diego Comic-Con usually would be in San Diego. But that’s not so this year. Underway this week, now it’s taking place via feed on anyone’s screen who cares to check it out. And some are reminding folks of the upside to exploring the event from the convenience of home.

“There might be no event less conducive to social distancing than Comic-Con, the annual pop-culture gathering that packs 130,000 people into San Diego’s convention center. Granted, there are a lot of masks, but many are of the Captain America or Batman variety that covers the wrong part of the face.

Having griped about this largest-of-its-kind event in the past — the long lines, dizzying logistics, cramped crowds, and strange smells associated with all those costumes — it’s hard not to acutely feel its absence. The reasons to complain about Comic-Con are, suddenly, all the reasons to miss it.”

“Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase on Thursday ran down a lineup of games coming to the Xbox Series X, the company’s next console scheduled to arrive this holiday season. Unlike its competitors, though, Microsoft has emphasized throughout the run-up to this new console that these games will be playable even if you don’t pick up that piece of hardware right away.

All of the games announced at this show will be on Xbox Game Pass at launch, and many of them will be released on the Xbox One. If you have a decent computer with Windows 10 and a willingness to subscribe to Game Pass, all of these games will be available to you.

In Thursday’s stream, Microsoft showed off 22 different games that will appear on Xbox consoles, including 10 brand-new game announcements.”

While not moving as many units as The Last of Us Part 2 in its first three days, nonetheless Ghost of Tsushima’s numbers are nothing to sneeze at.

“Ghost of Tsushima sold through 2.4 million copies in its first three days on sale, Sony announced today.

The samurai action game from Sucker Punch is now the fastest-selling new intellectual property from Sony this generation, the company said.”

Epic Games has handed out over $42 million in Epic MegaGrants to more than 600 developers as part of its program to accelerate the work of talented teams working with the company’s Unreal Engine tools.

Launched a year ago, Epic has set aside $100 million for the Epic MegaGrants program for teams working with its game engine, 3D graphics tools, and open source software. That largesse reflects the sentiment of Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, who has often voiced his support for encouraging small developers, as well as sharing the riches that Epic has earned from its multibillion-dollar Fortnite game.”

MMORPGs were really on fire one to two decades ago, in the heady days of Ultima Online, EverQuest and many others, but are they still a growth market? Some new research suggests MMORPGs still are.

“The MMORPG gaming market is expected to grow at a CAGR of about 9.5% during the forecast period of 2020-2025.

The rising craze of gamification among millennials has led to the creation of a virtual world for the video gamers, where they get a virtual economy, currency, trade environment, and real-time scenarios to deal with. With the help of gamification technology, the game developers successfully keep the gamers engaged in the role-playing games and also encourage them to stake more real money to receive the benefits or boosters over the games. This strategy has also facilitated the MMORPG game publishers and developers to generate more sales by retaining old players and attracting others to get involved in these games.”

Check out the research summary above for more facts and figures from this report.
