Tokyo Game Show Loses Attendance But Still 2nd Highest Ever

The Tokyo Game Show is a few weeks back in the rear view mirror, but the head counters have been tallying up the numbers of folks who attended across the four days of sprawling event goodness. The Japanese national newspaper Asahi Shimbun revealed the big (well, slightly less big) picture:

“The 2014 Tokyo Game Show attracted 251,832 visitors during its Sept. 18-21 run, a decrease of about 6.7 percent from last year’s 270,197 but still the second-largest number in its history, organizers said.

A total of 56,433 people attended the convention on the first two days at the Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba, when it was open only to industry professionals and the media.

On the last two days, which were open to the general public, 195,399 game fans attended, with 92,308 showing up on Sept. 20 and 103,091 on the final day. The figures include 15,196 people who visited the Family Area in two days.”

However, where the Tokyo Game Show may have only silver-medalled in sheer numbers this year, the event’s attendees still won out in the enthusiastic participation category. The expo drew a record 421 exhibitors in 2014 and a record high of 601 business meetings were held bvia the event’s appointment system.

For those gamers, media and businesspeople who might want to throw their hat into the ring for next year, the Tokyo Game Show 2015 is inked for September 17-20 at the Makuhari Messe convention center.
