Senior Director of Game Analytics to share how game and software companies use game analytics

0

At the Gaming Analytics Summit, being held on May 1 and 2 2014, Senior Director of Game Analytics Arthur Von Eschen will discuss how Activision uses analytics in their games to provide the best experience for players. Because Call of Duty is competitive and popular, it faces a large challenge in stopping cheaters from ruining the experience for normal gamers.

Another keynote at this event will be Mike Ambinder, who will give insight into how Valve Software developed an analytical framework to inform them throughout the design, development, and feedback processes. Mike will also show people how they have used this framework to create unique and challenging products.

Here are some other keynote speakers for this event:

– VP, Marketing Science and Analytics, Electronic Arts

– Senior Director, Game Analytics Services, Ubisoft

– Head of User Research, Bungie Studios

– Senior Manager, Acquisition, Sega

– CEO, Broken Bulb Studios

New PAX South Show Announced for January 2015

Middle America and the southern US is about to get some serious games expo love from Penny Arcade — the brand-new PAX South show.

As described in a press release sent out this morning, “In front of a sellout crowd at PAX East 2014, ReedPOP, the world’s leading producer of pop culture events, and Penny Arcade, one of the largest gaming communities on the Internet, announced the addition of a new PAX event to the calendar – PAX South. Slated to debut in San Antonio, Texas in early 2015, the southern addition marks the fourth PAX show and third to occur in the U.S., continuing the tradition of proving the most authentic celebration of game culture in the world.”

“The love of gaming in all its many forms, whether that be on a TV, a computer, a phone, or even a tabletop, is hitting an all-time high. PAX gives gaming fans one place to get a glimpse of emerging trends and does it in a truly fun and interactive way,” said Lance Fensterman, Global Vice President of ReedPOP.

Robert Khoo, Penny Arcade President, added, “Since its launch in 2004, PAX events have doubled in size almost every year, and our Seattle and Boston events represent the two largest gaming festivals in North America. We’ve been hearing for years that those in the south had a tough time making it to the northern corners of the country; PAX South has always been a matter of ‘when’ rather than ‘if.'”

I’d also add, that a show in the winter in a warmer Texas is likely to attract a large number of shivering, snow-shoveling gamers and gaming culture enthusiasts, not just regionally but from the north too.

As attendees who’ve attended PAX shows bracketing either coast can attest, expect tens of thousands of gamers, anime, board and card-gamers, music, gaming competitions, talks, and yes, parties too, over the course of a few days.

For regular PAX-goers and gamers in the Midwest and South, you can pencil in — or ink — the dates onto your calendar for January 23-25, 2015 in San Antonio.

FMX

At FMX 2014, Chaos Group plans to showcase how V-ray supports VFX students and indie filmmakers across the globe. Student teams and professional artists are using 3ds Max and Maya to show people how new improvements to V-ray 3.0 are used in these programs on film and animation projects. They are also showing people how students can get a leg up in the field.

When students stop by the Chaos Group booth, they can meet with representatives, see V-ray for Blender in action, and try out both versions of V-ray 3.0 in the FMX marketplace. Miguel Ortega and Tran Ma, makers of Green Ruby Pumpkin, will be giving speeches on how their team approaches creature design on The Ningyo. Blake Sweeney, CG Supervisor of Method studios, will do a demonstration of the invisible effects used in the mirror sequence on the film Divergent.

Students will also be able to hear Sweeney talk about studios benefiting from V-ray’s advanced ray tracing capabilities. Sweeney also worked on Robocop and Iron Man 3; during a special lecture session, he will give insight into how students can make a great portfolio and successfully approach blockbuster film work. Peter Mitev, CEO of Chaos Group, will discuss how GPU-accelerated V-Ray RT 3.0 rendering is establishing a new paradigm for filmmaking.

Wargaming.net Locks and Loads $10 Million into eSports for 2014

0

Wargaming is planning to step up investment into eSports gaming to the tune of $10 million in 2014, over $8 million in 2013, according to GamesIndustry.biz. The “why” for it is player demand, said Wargaming CEO Victor Kisyli at a Warsaw, Poland press conference. The numbers seem to bear that out: “In 2012, for example, 30,000 pro players took part in 120 World of Tanks tournaments; in 2013, that ballooned to 200,000 players across more than 1000 World of Tanks tournaments.”

The growth of eSports as an interest within the Wargaming community extrapolates well from the growth in overall registered player counts, which is confirmed at 80 million.

The new eSports unit within Wargaming will be similar to a company within a company, presumably attending to the needs of competitive gamers, spectators, gaming tournaments, etc.

eSports is a growth industry itself, according to Superdata Research and Newzoo, with 70 million viewers worldwide — and 31.4 million hailing from the US alone. The prize pools are being upped to keep pace with the strong and growing interest in competitive gaming, with $25 million offered in 2013.

Google I/O 2014 Registration to Open a Week Later Than Planned

No more are the days where thousands of people are lined up at their PCs, fingers hovering over their mice, waiting for the green light to hammer registration systems for the chance to attend Google’s annual I/O conference for the Android ecosystem. This year, it will be a random lottery, as Apple’s WWDC Conference just had, one that has been delayed from April 8th to April 15th.

As posted on the Google Developers page in regards to Google I/O, “We’re still working to make the registration process even easier for you, and it will now be open four days starting next week (opening next Tuesday and closing Friday). After the registration window closes, applicants will randomly be selected and we’ll send ticket purchase confirmation emails shortly thereafter.”

Time will tell if a lottery system works out more smoothly than the first-come-first-serve system had, but at at least this time around there’s a longer window for everyone interested in attending to cast their lots and see how lucky they are.

Hiroshi Ishii, Director of Tangile Media Group at MIT MEDIA LAB, to Keynote at AWE 2014; to Host VIP Party (PRESS RELEASE)

For those gamers and game industry suits and ties with a love of wearable technology (i.e Google Glass), augmented reality (i.e AR.Race 2) and the Internet of Things (ie. ZowPow), the Augmented Reality World 2014 conference and expo is coming up in just under two months. Events for Gamers will check it out and see how much in the augmented reality space intersects with games, now and for the future. The press release below gives you a crash course what to expect from AWE 2014 in late May.

“Santa Clara, CA, March 23, 2014 – The organizers of Augmented World Expo 2014 are proud to announce that Hiroshi Ishii, a noted professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab and pioneer in Human Computer Interaction, will kick off the final day with a Keynote address on the future of HCI. AWE 2014 will take place on May 27-29th at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA. Well-known tech evangelist Robert Scoble will provide the keynote on May 28th.

Augmented World Expo, now in its fifth year, is the world’s largest international event for augmented reality, wearable computing, gesture devices, and the Internet of Things. This year’s show will boast over 200 exhibits from elite brands like Epson, Qualcomm and Intel to pioneering startup such as Daqri, Arqetype, Ngrain, and many more. Attendees will also experience a Wearable Fashion Show produced by Living in Digital Times, the Auggie Awards, a wearable tech Hackathon, the Glass Class: Designing Wearable Interfaces by Mark Billinghurst and 100 additional talks.

Hiroshi Ishii is Jerome B. Wiesner Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at the MIT Media Lab. He joined the MIT Media Lab in October 1995. He founded and directs the Tangible Media research group, and co-directs the Things That Think (TTT) consortium.

Professor Ishii’s research focuses upon the design of seamless interfaces between humans, digital information, and the physical environment. His team seeks to change the “painted bits” of GUIs to “tangible bits” by giving physical form to digital information.

“Today’s mainstream Human Computer Interaction research addresses functional concerns – the needs of users, practical applications, and usability evaluation,” explains Professor Ishii. “At Augmented World Expo I’ll be revealing our vision for the future, which we call Radical Atoms – in which all digital information has a physical manifestation so that we can interact directly with it. This will actually re-invent the way people interact with computers by taking advantage of the richness of human senses. I will be showing a variety of interaction design projects that utilize this new approach.”

“Professor Ishii is a pioneer in Human Computer Interaction and his research and vision have already influenced everything that AWE is all about – augmented reality, wearable technology, and the Internet of Things,” said Ori Inbar, executive director of AWE 2014 and cofounder of Augmentedreality.org. “Truly, it is an honor to have him participate in AWE 2014 and give us a window into the future.”

International Games Week Berlin 2014

0

Berlin, 2 April, 2014.

The organisers of the INTERNATIONAL GAMES WEEK BERLIN 2014 and its individual events presented the varied programme during a press conference yesterday and provided facts and figures about the games market and its importance for Germany and Berlin.

Around 34 million people in Germany use computer and video games. According to figures by the German Trade Association of Interactive Entertainment Software (BIU), the industry posted € 1.82 billion of turnover in 2013. A strong industry which is experiencing global growth with a new generation of consoles, game titles, powerfully told stories both content-wise as well as technically and visually, and with cross-platform game experiences. Games have long since become an established and growing element of the global entertainment industry.

The comments of the GAMES WEEK organisers made it clear that over a dozen individual events under the auspices of the INTERNATIONAL GAMES WEEK BERLIN 2014 will not only be appealing to the professional audience, but are also targeted at an interested general public.

Berlin has a week of games entertainment on offer for everybody

The Gamefest at the Computer Games Museum and the International Independent Games Festival A MAZE. / Berlin have games entertainment on offer for all of those interested, players and non-players, in all the various facets and forms. With Let’s Play and Speedrun events, Indie Games to play, the Night of the Re-narrated Game, the Japanese dressing-up trend Cosplay, game plays, award ceremonies, performances, workshops, talks and parties, the GAMES WEEK has opened up itself much more for the general public than was the case in the past at the German Games Days. The visitors can play on over 100 games from around the world in the exhibitions.

Let’s Play, Charity Gaming Marathon, Game Play and much more: Gamefest at the Computer Games Museum (8 – 13 April, Computer Games Museum)

The Gamefest at the Computer Games Museum approaches the world of video games in a playful way with innovative and experimental formats and invites everyone to join in. The highlight on Saturday, 12 April, will be the appearance of the Let’s Play superstars Gronkh and Sarazar, whose MyVideo and YouTube channels have clocked up several million subscribers: Let’s Play with Fans will give fans the unique opportunity to see the two gamers live in action. The Charity Gaming Marathon from Friday, 11 to Sunday, 13 April, will have well-known speedrunners from across Europe competing against one another for a good cause. The aim of the speedrun is to get to the end of a game as quickly as possible  – by any means.

On Sunday, 13 April, the Computer Games Museum will be opening its costume and material store and inviting the visitors of the Gamefest to take part in the Cosplay. In the Japanese dressing-up trend, the goal is to depict a character from a computer game as close to the original as possible through the costume and behaviour. Analogous to a literary reading, the Gamesfest will present the Game play format which has been developed by the Foundation of Digital Gaming Culture and has a gamer’s game play commented live on stage by a moderator and a games expert (also on Sunday, 13 April).

A games trend originating in Budapest is conquering Europe: Escape the Room is the name of the game between digital virtuality and analogue reality where the players – locked in a real room and only connected via an ¨operator¨ with the outside world – have to solve a series of riddles in order to escape from the room.

In the following Night of the Re-Narrated Game, members of the audience can spontaneously come onto the stage and re-tell the complete story or an extract of a computer game as well as their personal experiences associated with the game. The winners of the competition organised in cooperation with the Berlin-based network Gamestorm will take home great prizes. The Gamefest ends with a concert by D’Artagnan who has arranged well-known game melodies in the style of gypsy jazz.

During the whole week, the GameFest will be presenting the exhibition Let’s Play! Computer Games from France and Poland where current computer games from both countries are exhibited in such a way that the visitors can play on them. The exhibition is being staged in cooperation with the Institut Français in Berlin, the Polish Cultural Institute in Berlin and the Instytut Adam Mickiewiecz and can be seen until 5 May. http://gamefest.computerspielemuseum.de

Play, Performances, Panels and Parties: A MAZE. / Berlin ( 9 – 11 April, Urban Spree & The WYE)

The 3rd International Independent Video Games Festival A MAZE. / Berlin will be presenting Europe’s largest and trend-setting international independent games exhibition on over 1,000 m2 in the Urban Spree with over 70 exhibitors from 20 countries. Visitors can play the 15 nominees for the A MAZE. Awards, which will be presented in three categories on 11 April, as well as a handpicked selection of unique independent games, playful installations and virtual reality experiences. A MAZE. celebrates the flourishing diversity, artistic interaction with technology and the cultural value of the most important art form of our age. The exhibited works by the independent games developers reflect the creative nature of gaming and the passion for developing digital game formats. The Local Multiplayer Picnic invites everyone to take part in a daily tournament, an interactive glitch game art showcase by the #weirdkids group and an appropriate music programme so that the Urban Spree will become the most exciting independent games location that Berlin, Europe, the world has ever seen. http://amaze-berlin.de
